Infertility is a complex, yet simple process. In as many as 50% of couples, the causes of infertility are combined, meaning both the female and male partners have problems. For this reason, it is considered mandatory that both partners attend the initial assessment visit. During the initial evaluation, a comprehensive history of both partners will be obtained. In addition, a physical examination will be undertaken. It is very important to note that most insurance companies do not pay for any portion of an infertility evaluation or its treatment. Our administrative staff will do the best they can to obtain reimbursement; however you should call your insurance company prior to your infertility appointment to discuss fertility coverage.

Following the initial office visit, there is typically more testing required. For the female, blood tests including, but not limited to, a thyroid and prolactin screen are ordered. Additionally, the female partner will often be asked to have an hysterosalpingogram (HSG). This is an x-ray dye study of the uterus and tubes that will be thoroughly explained during an appointment. For the male factor portion of the evaluation, a semen analysis is required.

Upon completion and review of all the above, a treatment plan will be suggested. Most couples will be able to achieve pregnancy with simple, relatively inexpensive treatments. However, some patients may require an increased level of procedures that can include medications, ultrasound monitoring of egg development (folliculogram) and even laparoscopy.
