The 1st choice for perinatology in Missoula is Rocky Mountain Women's Health @ The Birth Center.
Perinatology: Maternal-Fetal Medicine

The goal of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist is to give the best healthcare possible and to keep you informed of your baby's health, your health, and the progress of your pregnancy. Dr. Montgomery is here for you, guiding you through all aspects of your pregnancy.

Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) is a sub-specialty of obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Montgomery’s ultrasound training enables detailed evaluations of all aspects of the fetus including growth and development, anomalies, fetal well being, anemia, and amniotic fluid volume. Based on training and a more frequent exposure to the unique aspects of a complicated pregnancy, we are able to provide a more cost-effective management strategy. An essential aspect of prenatal diagnosis is genetic counseling. Dr. Montgomery is qualified to provide genetic counseling for patients. Dr. Montgomery’s goal with high-risk pregnancies is to keep you and your baby healthy at home and out of the hospital.

Another specialized area of MFM care is consultation and management of pregnancy-associated complications. This is a multifaceted role working with patients with medical problems including patients with preterm labor or other complications related to the pregnancy itself. A specialist in MFM is trained to manage most medical problems that may co-exist with a pregnancy. These include, but are not limited to, diabetes, cardiovascular problems, thyroid disease, hematologic complications, and renal and hepatic abnormalities.

MFM is an extension of the medical management and entails critical care aspects of the pregnant or recently delivered patient. Pregnant patients have a differing physiology, which is integral in their medical management. This becomes paramount when dealing with critical care issues. Thus, the majority of intra- and peri-partum critical care is managed by a specialist in MFM. This care extends into operative obstetrics as well. Operative obstetrics addresses such conditions as premature "hour-glassing" fetal membranes requiring rescue cerclage, postpartum hemorrhage and emergency cesarean sections.

Dr. Montgomery is well qualified through his medical training and work to handle complicated pregnancies. Dr. Montgomery works hand-in-hand with many general obstetricians in Western Montana performing "targeted" ultrasounds, amniocentesis, bio-physical profiles, and many more procedures requiring his expertise. Dr. Montgomery is highly qualified in managing all high-risk pregnancies and also assisting in the co-management of other obstetricians' high-risk pregnancy patients.
